Niners Clip Seahawks
With the options of Greg Papa and Tim Ryan on the radio, or exclusionary Stream, I went old-school -- Radio, and a Dynamite duo they were, (plus the game could be watched later on the NFL Channel, with the same result). Radio, television or stream, the Niners slapped a cold, wet Pacific salmon across Pete Carroll's face!
As the action began, Seattle was so focused on CMC (Christian McCaffery), that Purdy could march the team downfield, capped with a classic play fake: look right, then left, and pass to Kittle over the middle for a TD, with 1:14 left in the quarter: (7-0 49ers.) Purdy had started with 11 straight completions.
After a sustained Seattle drive, Arik Armstead forced QB Geno Smith to throw one away, and they had to settle for a 38-yard FG: (7-3, 49ers.)
The Niners lucked out when Seattle bungled a sure interception at 1:56 in the second Q. -- quite possibly the biggest play of the game! Then, at 1:08, Seattle fumbled and Tarvarius Moore ran it all the way to the Seattle five-yard line. Two plays later, "Run CMC" would take it in for a 49er TD. (14-3.)
Ray-Ray McCloud III started the third with a 35-yard return, soon to be followed by a picturesque, zigzag 54-yard TD pass/run to George Kittle. (21-3.) Seattle would make it (21-6) with a FG, after Smith was sacked by Bosa, who was an unstoppable monster all game.
After a big run by Ray-Ray and a tough catch by "Mr. Clutch," Jauan Jennings, Mitch Wishnowky masterfully dropped a punt which settled on the Seattle five-yard line. After exchanges, Purdy zipped one to TE Tyler Kroft for a key 31-yard completion. Robbie Gould then missed a 43-yard FG try. (Still 21-6.)
Seattle added tension to the game when they scored after a pass to Kenneth Walker and then one to Noah Fant for the TD, with 3:39 left. (21-13.) CMC would run a couple of times after the kickoff, then Purdy ran for a first down and wisely slid to stay in bounds and ate some clock.
Papa and Ryan blared: "He's a Rock Star!" "He's Rock and Roll Purdy!" (Great radio!)
Jordan Mason came in and, in his Gore-like fashion, ran for 10 yards and then a 51-yard streak to the two-yard line and time ran out.
Grill that salmon, Pete!
SAN FRANCISCO WINS THE NFC WEST. Purdy: 17 for 26 and 217 yards. Kittle, two touchdowns. Plus, some of the hardest hits any Defense has inflicted upon an opponent in recent memory. "THUD" was the word of the day. And VICTORY!

Letters to the Editor
Warriors are 'Finished' as NBA title contenders, Kendrick Perkins believes
First: We miss you Steph. Hurry back!
Now to Kendrick's statement on First Take: "Are they finished when it comes down to a championship? And the answer is, "Hell yeah they are."
And my Rebuttal: "Big Perk" is as wrong as wrong can be. (Just like on First Take.)
Klay, Poole, Wiggs, Wiseman, JK, Moody et al. will quickly emerge as a potent force and keep the W's in the hunt until Steph's return. When it's time for the playoffs, the Dubs, with "Fresh Steph" will become the media's anointed, official, "The team you'd least-like to face."
And for good reason. They know those other teams' seasons will end when they play the Warriors.

"Jeopardy" -- Sports Today! Style
Category: San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks
The Answer: Veni, Vidi, Vici: ("I came, I saw, I conquered." -- Julius Caesar.)
The Correct Question is: What did Brock Purdy say to Pete Carroll?
That, and "Flapp'n your gums won't help."

The 49ers Next Draft
The 49ers like to think outside the proverbial box. This idea fits that model.
Recently, more and more plays involve a mass of offensive players
who push and shove a runner from their own team, after a run appears to have been stopped, and move him forward, often into the end zone.
How about the Niners draft some big, bad Cal Bear rugby dudes who can utilize their rugby skills to push an entire pile of players for those
extra yards. No longer will a runner get stuffed on the One Yard Line.
If the defense can't find the runner, they won't be able to tackle him.
Or send them into the huddle, as decoys, so the opponents expect a
run. Then flip a pass to the intended receiver.
In an era of specialization, this is one for the 49ers to create and implement. The word "unstoppable" comes to mind.

A 49ers Dilemma --
Three Starting Quarterbacks!
by Dave Newhouse
| |
Wait a minute, say that again: Three different starting quarterbacks have just secured the San Francisco 49ers an NFL playoff berth. You’re kidding, right?
The next thing you’ll tell me is that the Leaning Power of Pisa suddenly straightened itself erect overnight, and that gas prices have dropped to a dollar a gallon, and planet Earth, truthfully, is flat.
All right, all right, those comparisons are gross exaggerations, but that three quarterback postseason run is a pro football believe-it-or-not happening.
First Trey Lance, then Jimmy Garoppolo, and now Brock Purdy have, together, achieved the improbable: A potential Super Bowl candidate.
Look back through pro football history, and it’s doubtful that this scenario with the 49ers has a precedent. Two starting quarterbacks leading a postseason charge has been done before, but a trifecta? Possibly in the league’s infancy, the experimental 1920s, or during the 1930s Depression days, or when America was at war during the player-shortage 1940s, though there’s nothing since then to block such a possibility.
So let’s just say in modern pro football, these 49ers have done the unthinkable. But what’s even more remarkable, quarterback No. 3 is Mr. Irrelevant, the last player taken in the 2022 NFL draft. Until Purdy, no player taken 262nd, or dead last, had thrown for or scored a touchdown. And Purdy has done both.
He clearly was an afterthought as the seventh quarterback chosen, even though he was a four-year starter at Iowa State. But after Garoppolo broke his foot against Miami, Purdy led the 49ers to a 33-17 victory. Tampa Bay now had film on the kid, but he then directed a 35-7 blowout of the Bucs. Seattle then had even more information on Brock, but he led a 21-13 win on the road.
Purdy is the most composed substitute rookie quarterback these eyes have ever seen. He, supposedly, had an average arm, the biggest pre-draft knock against him. But so far he has thrown the short pass, the deep pass, and the sideline pass, all with precise accuracy. And when he’s had to run from trouble, he’s gotten first downs that way, too.
He resembles a seasoned pro, and not some starry-eyed lad who was taking final exams a year ago. He seems a leader in the huddle and on the gridiron. How does all of this happen so quickly? It’s truly astonishing.
Of course, the 49ers have a championship-ready defense who limit opponents’ scoring opportunities, a big factor in the team’s current seven-game winning streak. But NFL offenses still have to score in order to prevail, and Purdy has delivered like….Joe Montana?
Speaking of whom, remember Joe Cool's rivalry with teammate Steve Young? Well, the 49ers are deep into two quarterback duels, dating back to Frankie Albert versus Y.A. Tittle. Then it was Tittle and John Brodie, Brodie and Steve Spurrier, Montana and Young, Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick, and numerous others in between. But three quarterbacks? The only occasions that occurred were when the 49ers were mired in losing.
So how will this three-headed monster situation be resolved? Who can say at this point, but the 49ers traded a number of high-quality draft picks to select Lance a year ago, and they still want to see him develop. Purdy is a diamond in the rough whom the Niners don’t want to let slip away. So it appears that Garoppolo is the odd man out, even though he did lead them to a Super Bowl.
But if Purdy wins the next Super Bowl….OK, hold it, let’s not get carried away.
Just yet.

Stanford Continuing Studies
Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119
Title: Make Sense of the Madness:
The Evolving Business of College Athletics
Instructor -- Andy Dolich
The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and
in the future?
This course examines the business of college sports past,
present and future.
Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports
Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson
Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher
Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner
Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun
Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved
constituencies.
Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.
Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

Giants
“Nervous Money”
goes to Correa
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
SAN FRANCISCO – National baseball reporter Jon Heyman said about the Giants signing Carlos Correa for 13 years and $350 million; “Grossly overpaid, and so not worth it.”
A few weeks ago the Giants told their fans and the whole baseball world they were going after Aaron Judge, the Yankee slugger who established a new home run record in the American League this past season, hitting 62 home runs, and that they (Giants) had all the money needed to make the 6′ 7" Judge a San Francisco Giant.
Jon Heyman, among the reporters in San Diego covering the winter meetings, wrote the news that the Giants had signed Aaron Judge. A few minutes letter he had to apologize as he retracted the so-called breaking news. Judge is the guy the Giants needed to create that buzz that is not there anymore at Oracle Park, a true slugger with devastating power to all fields.
At the end, Judge decided to stay in the Bronx with the Yankees, the legacy of the most famous franchise in American history. Let’s face it, the Giants haven’t had a good farm system since GM Brian Sabean, so they were desperate to give this no opt-out, full-no trade deal to Carlos Correa, whose agent is Scott Boras, the best there is.
The San Francisco Giants needed a power bat, a hitter with power of around 40 home runs and 100 runs batted in. As good as a shortstop Correa has been, he is not your typical slugger, not of that kind. But the Giants had “nervous money” that had to be given to a player in order to try to please their fan base that have been waiting for that home run, that offensive savior since Barry Bonds, who retired in 2007 with 762 home runs.
The Giants are feeling the pressure and they want to bring another title to San Francisco, especially now when just three blocks away the Warriors play at Chase Center and have become the most successful team in San Francisco. The Giants want to recoup that “mojo” they had when they won three World Series in a six-year span. But this signing might not do it. Carlos Correa is a great defensive shortstop and a very good hitter, but he is no Aaron Judge.
The 13-years, $350 million contract is the largest for an infielder in the history of baseball. Correa will be 41 years old when he retires. In the history of the game only Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout ($426.5 million), Los Angeles Dodgers Mookie Betts ($365 million), and New York Yankees Aaron Judge ($360 million) have been guaranteed more in a contract.
The Giants and the Western Division: The San Diego Padres lineup is indeed a scary one: Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatís Jr. and Xander Bogaerts, not necessarily in that order, but all very productive and dangerous hitters. Tatis Jr. will miss the first 32 games of the 2023 season as he completes his 80-game suspension from last season when he proved positive for illegal substances. San Diego manager Bob Melvin’s team might be the one to beat in 2023 in the West.

Brock Purdy reminds me of
Joe Montana...Our D makes me think of Ronnie Lott, et al..
by Howard Pearlstein
I watched Penn State football, my old school, but for the four years when Nick Bosa was playing for Ohio State, it was guaranteed that once a year, he’d leave me Alma Muttering after taking the offense apart.
So, as I’ve said before, when the 9ers drafted him, I was delighted, seeing him doing what he does for my team. Wow.
Well, not just him, but Arik and Dre and Al-Shaair, and Hufanga (with whom I always associate Jordan Willis, since it was Willis who blocked the punt that Hufanga caught for the amazing Kick Six against Green Bay last year).
And the two Wards and Fred Warner and… because the 49ers D does that thing the Warriors do when they're all healthy and playing – act as more than a team, but a single creature in multiple parts -- an almost telepathically connected group, knowing it doesn’t matter who gets the sack or causes the fumble or does the pick as long as it gets done, (but competing with each other to be the one who gets to do the thing), going after it like a pack of hungry wolves singing Kumbaya as they run, splitting up into groups to chase down the QB, even as actual wolves do to bring down a 1,500 pound moose, splitting the group into two -- one group chasing, the other one coming around to be right there to meet him. (This is true -- the diagrams biologist Donald Mech drew of the tactics wolves use on Isle Royale could have been drawn up by a defensive coach.)
However, my friend Charlie in Czech Republic is from here and a fan and he has to stay up till 4 or 5 in the morning to watch the 9ers, sees it differently (and maybe he even nailed it better):
"You know how I see the defense? They're like a wall of water: You ever see anybody or pretty much any THING that could stop a wall of water? No. Force majeure on one level, and on the other, ultimately fluid, each molecule able to do infinite damage -- no wall too impermeable -- they always find a way through it to soak the QB, to whom of course, like the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz, water is anathematic."
Whichever -- they bring up memories of the 1981 Super Bowl D – Ronnie Lott, Dwaine Board, Jim Stuckey, Willie Harper, Dan Bunz, Hacksaw Reynolds, Keena Turner, Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, Carlton Williamson, and Archie Reese.
A thought about Steph Curry – subluxation means dislocated shoulder. And, unlike the movies where someone does a twist and a rotate and pops it back in and there you go. Well, no. I had it happen a couple of years ago and the emergency room doctor told me: “Just go home and do nothing. Just lie back and watch a lot of tv.”
And I said: “I can do that. I’m good at that, have a lot of practice.”
Took me months of PT, but I was old and out of shape, but thank you Simon Gibson at Montclair Physical Therapy.
For a professional athlete, especially one who works out as intensely as Steph Curry, it’s got to be crazy-making. Get well soon, Steph.

Wayne Gretzky -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
Wayne Douglas Gretzky is a former Canadian professional ice hockey player and former head coach. He played 20 seasons in the NHL and coached five years. Having won five Stanley Cup championships in the 1980s, he is recognized as the greatest hockey player to ever play
the game.
I’ve had the fortune to meet Wayne Gretzky annually at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament. I knew the best time to meet the golfers was during putting practice before the daily matches began. I came prepared and had his photo ready with me on the practice putting area. When he was done practicing he walked over to the fan zone and signed for everyone there. I was fortunate to get his signature on this photo.
I heard a story that he has only autographed one of his rookie trading cards and stored it in a safe for his son. If his son ever decides to auction off the one and only signed rookie card, it would undoubtedly fetch six figures.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s Cars & Coffee for a Cause Raises Food and Toy Donations for Food Bank for
Monterey County
MONTEREY, Calif., December 13, 2022—More than 350 people arrived at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Saturday, Dec. 3 under cloudy skies, occasional drizzle and brisk temperatures to join Cars & Coffee for a Cause to benefit the Food Bank for Monterey County. In just two hours, five large barrels were overflowing with donations that will be dispersed to families in need this holiday season.
“The Food Bank provides such a valuable service throughout Monterey County, and this year more than ever is relying on fundraisers and community support to help our neighbors,” commented John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “We are humbled to play even a small role in helping.”
Approximately 60 percent were returning Cars & Coffee guests. Yet despite the uncertain weather, a number of locals who had heard about the fundraiser arrived with both canned goods and toys. Even one guest had an enormous teddy bear buckled in his front seat to present to the Food Bank.
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca season partners also joined in the morning’s activities. Monterey Touring Vehicles had a display of three classic cars, while Coastal Roots Hospitality brewed and served delicious coffee and hot chocolate.
This was the final Cars & Coffee of the year and was a noticeably quiet affair than previous gatherings. With the track closed for construction projects and repaving, the welcome sights and sounds of cars on track were replaced with geese honking overhead and birds chirping in the trees that fill the Laguna Seca Recreation Area campground.
A special thanks to Anthony Jimenez of Monterey Cars and Coffee who volunteered to help park cars, while WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca staff and Laguna Seca Volunteer Association’s Tammo Stubbe greeted everybody to ensure the morning was enjoyable, while also engaging with prospective volunteers. Cars & Coffee is co-sponsored by Monterey Touring Vehicles, My Chevrolet and Racer Coffee.

The recipes are explicitly presented.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
